Creating an entirely new show sometimes comes out of nowhere. You don't even know when the inspiration for something like that will hit. Creating Once Upon a Cocktail had a rather strange start. The idea was set into place years ago when I was a young boy. My grandfather used to tell me stories all the time as a young man. He was a natural storyteller he had what all creators strive for, that natural raw talent to tell a story and absolutely captivate those who were listening. It didn't even matter if the story was true or completely outrageous, you believed it without a shadow of a doubt. He had me dead convinced that Jackalopes were real till I was 18 years old. I wish I had half the skill he had in telling stories. He could have been a fantastic conman... or content creator, whichever you prefer. Nonetheless, that is where the idea for Once Upon a Cocktail really started. It was not until later that we decided to take some of the stories he told me as a child and re-tell them, find their origin, and create a delicious cocktail that goes along with them.
We wanted to match the origin of the story as well as the content of the story with a delicious cocktail. I have always believed that everything we do has a story behind it. So, what makes a cocktail any different, it has its own history and culture. We thought what better way to create a delicious cocktail than, match it with a story, folklore, fable, and legends. We wanted to match the ingredients in the drink with things you would find in the land of origin or the content of the story. I found one of my best friends (who does not drink) to read the story too and discuss the story. while we share a drink. We wanted to create a simple set, nothing special. We shoot it in a kitchen bar. We wanted it to be an authentic conversation. I think we have come close to capturing that vibe. It is still a work in progress that we will keep working to perfect. Now, unfortunately, I don't have the storytelling skills like my grandfather. But I think he would appreciate that after he passed, I kept something that was far more important than material. I kept a tradition of orally passing on stories. We often don't realize how important some of these stories can be to our everyday lives.
